When and How Should You Prune Your Roses?

Rose bushes that are not pruned can grow into large tangled messes with small and inferior blooms. The following should allow you to grow an attractive well shaped and sized bush with large lovely blooms.

Pruning at the right time can be just as important as how you prune. Bushes should not be pruned until they begin coming out of dormancy. This can be as early as January in warm weather areas to as late as April in very cold areas. In colder areas do not prune until all danger of frost is past.

Using the proper tools is also very important. You need a good set of pruning shears, the type that have one side for cutting and one side for supporting. The shears must be sharp, otherwise they can tear your canes instead of cutting them. For older larger canes you will also need a good sharp fine toothed curved cutting saw that is lubricated. It is also a good idea to have some type of pruning paint or sealer to seal larger cuts. Do not forget good heavy canvas or leather gloves that can protect your hands.

Do not cut canes straight across. All cuts should be at an angle of between 40 to 65 degrees. Always make sure that the shear’s cutting blade is on the lower side of the cane in order to insure a clean cut. This way any injury to the plant will be on the upper part of the cane which will be discarded.

How much you prune depends on what you are trying to accomplish and on how well established the plant is. Moderate pruning, leaving 5 or more canes of up to 24 inches in length, will develop a large bush with nice moderate sized blooms. Light pruning, canes 3 to 4 feet in length, will produce an even larger bush but with smaller blooms on shorter stems and is good for newer or weaker plants. Heavy pruning, 3 to 4 canes from 6 to 12 inches in length will produce the largest, showiest blooms, however if the plant is too new or weak you may end up reducing the plants life span.

When pruning, remove all suckers as these grow from the root stock which is different from the grafted bush and may eventually take over and kill the bush. Cut out all week, spindly and deformed canes, and if possible cut out canes growing toward the center of the bush. If canes cross each other remove the weaker one. Proper shaping makes for a lovelier bush and allows proper air circulation which makes for a healthier plant.

Try to make all cuts down to a cane or if necessary down to about one quarter inch from a strong outside bud union or eye, the eye is where new growth stems from.

After pruning paint all major cuts with a sealer in order to aid in healing and to help keep out insects and diseases.

For generations, pruning trees shrubs and other garden plants has been somewhat of a mystery to gardeners, landscapers, and tree services.  Some trees behave so unpredictably to certain types of pruning, that it becomes an art form reserved for only the most experienced of experts.  In this article, I will explain some of the primary reasons why pruning is essential for the health and look of your trees.

At its simplest, pruning is a means of manipulating a trees growth, shape and productivity by cutting and training it to achieve a final goal.  Pruning correctly is not always dependent on knowing how and where to cut, but more knowing what you are trying to achieve, or the end result.  This requires a creative vision that takes years of practice to develop.  Some tree services and municipal authorities savagely chop trees to a uniform height or shape, to utilize efficient labor.  This shows little regard for the growth patterns and cycles of the different trees they are dealing with, and should be avoided when choosing a company to prune your trees.

It is important to hire an experienced service when having your trees pruned.  Getting it wrong can mean your trees don’t perform as they should in terms of producing flowers or fruit, and can deteriorate and become susceptible to pests and disease.  Plants that are hastily or heavily pruned can be as unproductive as unpruned specimens, and may bear no resemblance to the original form and habit of the tree.  On the other hand, well pruned trees will produce more fruit, will be more aesthetically pleasing, and will have more colorful stems and leaves.

Not all trees need to be pruned regularly.  Some are rarely touched, or are pruned only when they start to spread out beyond the spot in your yard designed for them.  Adversely, some trees exist in certain forms only because pruning shapes them in a certain way.  If you grow fruit trees, pruning becomes an extremely important way to keep your trees healthy, and capable of bearing much fruit.

When hiring a tree service for pruning, the service should explain the reasons for pruning in the manner proposed to you.  These reasons should include one or all of the following:  To train the tree to grow in a particular way, to balance the tree’s growth, to control the production of fruit, to maintain the trees health, or to restrict its growth.  Sometimes, remedial or renovation pruning may also be necessary from time to time.

It is important that you water the soil where your roses are planted instead of watering the plant or foliage. To help keep and preserve the moisture, try applying mulch (like wood chips or pine needles) around your roses.

For your roses to be at their best even during the summer, you should have fertilized your roses around three times during the year. You should have fertilized during the early spring, followed up during your roses’ first blooms and then the last application during July. It is essential that you regularly prune your roses. Utilize sharp pruning spears or cutters to make clean cuts and avoid damaging the branches. Your pruning spears should be kept dry to avoid it from becoming rusty. They should be regularly cleaned before using to prevent them having fungus that could give diseases to your roses.

Always get rid of dying or dead growth to prevent diseases from developing and to make your rose bushes look good. If you want your roses to be growing in the correct direction shape them while they are still growing. Also keep them away from other plants that may harm their growth.

The trick to growing roses is to have patience and effort in growing them. I’m sure that in no time you will be enjoying the beauty of your rose bushes.

Is there anything more perfect than a rose? These superb flowers have been a favorite of gardeners everywhere for literally hundreds of years on account of their timeless beauty, velvety petals, delightful scent and gorgeous variety of colors. The good news is that roses are fairly hardy and can be quite simple to grow. You need to be careful where you plant your rose bushes, since they require quite a lot of sun. There are also miniatures, hybrids, floribundas, grandifloras, polyanthas, heritage, shrubs, climbing and tree roses.

Deciding upon what variety of rose to go for will depend on your garden, taste and experience as a gardener. The palette of color and styles of blooms will also be a matter of personal preference, and you will be simply amazed by the breadth and range.

Once you have established a rose garden, you will be able to maintain your plants, by regular pruning and care. As far as plants go, however, roses are relatively low maintenance plants, which makes them a good choice for beginners!
