A stampede of flower power awaits dinner guests tomorrow at the Buffalo Inn in South Park.

Nasturtiums, lilacs and roses will flavor appetizers to desserts at the 2009 Edible Flowers Food Fest, which is in its ninth year.

Allegheny County Parks horticulturist Denise Schreiber — also a certified food handler — annually organizes the feast and prepares the foods with help from area master gardeners. She serve as many as 200 people of all ages at the yearly buffet.

This year, menu choices will include Lemon Verbena Salmon, Artichoke Chicken Salad with Jasmine Rice, Naughty Nasturtium Pasta, Lavender Shortbread, Lilac Jelly and Serviceberry-Raspberry Soup.

All guests will receive recipes, preparation tips and lists of edible and inedible flowers.

Roses bloom at annual show

Rose growing fans, word has it that The Southwestern Oregon Rose Society a Pony Village Mall was just an amazing blaze of color and spectacle.

Competitors from all around the South Coast went along to enter their blooms – there were 112 categories in all, with countless varieties on show.  If you have any photos of some of   them please send them in so that we can feature them in our hall of fame.

Yes, Roses are both Beautiful and Smart - Just ask the Rose Farmers in Yongdeng County, North West China.

I just loved this story and what an eye opener, in more ways than one.

We all know about the roses reputation as the “flower of love,” representing both romance and passion – this story from  the Beijing Review certainly deserves retelling.

The article in the Beijing Review reports that fFarmers in Yongdeng County, in northwest China’s Gansu Province, have found a new reason to fall in love—a local variety of  rose has become the their pot of gold.

The article s goes on to say that local government data indicates that 2,000 hectares, or half of the county’s lands, are dedicated to growing roses, which accounts for 70 percent of China’s total.

Yongdeng has its own well-known brand of roses. Because the county’s Kushui Township grows China’s best roses. The Kushui rose is the result of crossbreeding between two different species, according to Yu.

It is resistant to cold and drought, cares little for the quality of its soil and grows well in both acidic and alkaline soils. Its resistance to alkaline environments…..more
