Most home owners really enjoy having a fence around their property. There are all kinds of great benefits to a fence such as aesthetic appeal, increased property value, increased security, and even a little more privacy. The problem of course, is cost and maintenance, as well as what type of fence is right for you. There are a lot of options, so let’s go over a few of the most common.

Wood: The most traditional type of fence, you can do a lot with wood. From classic picket styles to more rustic “log fence” options, wood has been around for a long time. In particular, wood is great for home owners who are either ‘carpentry minded’ or who are only staying for a short period of time. Myself, when I had a lot of time to tinker in the shed, I would have no problem going out and fixing a fence post or repainting the whole thing. But once life starts to get a little busier, it no longer seems possible to keep up with all the repairs and maintenance. When my fence needed replacing I almost cried.

Iron: I mention this because it has a classic look and elegance that many people recognize and would like to imitate. Iron is more trouble than it’s worth for the degree of rust and maintenance involved. In my opinion, the same styles of iron fence that you can find are available in other materials that require much less work on your part.

Aluminum: Exactly what I was talking about in the last section. Aluminum is a wonderful material that is practically maintenance free. It’s weather resistant, moisture resistant, UV resistant, and with a powder coat finish becomes darn near impossible to really damage. It’s light weight and malleable during manufacturing which means less cost for you, and you can find it in either practical or ornamental styles. The only warning I have for aluminum is that dealers often tend to include “free shipping” as a sales hook, be warned that this rarely saves you money and often costs more. Arrange your own shipping if you’re going to buy aluminum fence.
